Chapter Nine, Black Castle of Wicklow
(Mid chapter: Reilly and Lottie are hidden from view, watching through an open window.)
All the Deceptors in the room formed a half-circle that
closed in on the row of prisoners, their hoods hanging down in front and
sleeves tucked together. Reilly and Lottie could only see the backside of the Deceptors’
cloaks.
The artist walked back and forth along the rows of hanging
portraits, studying each one and blowing on them, her back still towards Reilly and Lottie. The girl wore a white,
floor-length, ruffled chiffon dress, with tight-fitting sleeves that came to
her wrists. The halter-style neckline bared her shoulders and dipped low in the
back. Her bare feet were fettered, connected to a chain hanging down her back
from a thick iron collar. Except for the clanking of her shackles, the room was
silent.
In unison, the four Deceptors surrounding the cauldron
raised their metal sticks in the air and chanted.
